Runway 4/22 Rehabilitation Program
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport has a single runway with the following characteristics:
- Runway – 11,001 feet x 150 feet
- Asphalt Section – 6,500 feet
- Concrete Sections – two (2) 2,250 feet sections
- Shoulders – 11,001 feet x 35 feet
- Blast Pads – 400 feet x 220 feet
BACKGROUND
- The condition of Runway 4/22 is deteriorating.Â
- The use of heavier aircraft has accelerated the condition of the runway.
- Significant breakdown will occur over the next 3-5 years.Â
- Maintenace is increasing.Â
- The asphalt sections are in need of repair.Â
PROJECT APPROACH
- Three month night work pre-closure.
- Three full-day closures.
- Three-month night work post-closure.Â

PROJECT DETAILS
- Current Runway 4/22 at 11,001 feet long, supports commercial aviation, general aviation, and cargo traffic.Â
- The runway was last paved in 2009. Shoulders were last paved in 1996.
- The project will pave 6,500 feet of runway, 11,001 feet of shoulder, and blast pad ends. Concrete panels will be repaired and runway markings will be replaced.Â
- Runway will be closed to all traffic for three consecutive days with night work required prior to and post shutdown.Â
