In January 2023, the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District began a multi-phase program to improve traffic flow in and around the Terminal Complex at GSP. The program, called the Terminal Roadway Improvement Project (TRIP), will allow the airport to make roadway, curb and pedestrian enhancements to provide improved vehicle traffic flow and install necessary infrastructure that will allow the airport to continue to grow in the future.
To minimize disruptions to travelers and visitors to the airport, we have designed three distinct phases for the work. In each phase passengers and visitors will have full access to the airport and parking options. However, some temporary changes in traffic flow and parking availability will be necessary during the project.
As this project moves forward, we will provide frequent updates to ensure your next TRIP is easy.
Timeline
Phase 1A
- Construct a slip lane from in-bound Aviation Parkway to GSP Drive.
- Widen GSP Drive to three lanes up to the Terminal Parkway intersection.
- Construct a temporary access road from GSP Drive to the Airport Operations and Badging parking lot.
- Construct a temporary access road from GSP Drive to the employee parking lot.
Duration: Approximately 3 months.
Phase 1B
- Extend curbside roadway to the north with six lanes in a 4/2 configuration separated by a median.
- Construct new entrance to curb via Terminal Parkway at intersection with GSP Drive.
- Periodic lane closures and active traffic control can be expected on GSP Drive.
- Passengers will be routed to the terminal via GSP Drive and Terminal Parkway.
- Valet Parking will be temporarily relocated to Parking Garage B (PB).
- A new pedestrian crossing will be constructed between Garage B (PB) and the terminal.
Duration: Approximately 4 months.
Phase 2
- Reconstruct existing curbside roadway.
- All lanes of the expanded curb front to the north will be utilized for passenger drop-off and pick-up with traffic exiting at the southeast corner of Parking Garage B.
- Vehicle access to and from the Parking Garages will remain unchanged.
- Valet operations will remain in Garage B.
- Pedestrian access to the terminal will utilize the crosswalks from Garages A and B.
- A protected pathway for pedestrian access across the Garage A crosswalk will be maintained at all times during the construction of this phase.
Duration: Approximately 3.5 months.
Phase 3A
- Reconstruct GSP Drive approach to northern roundabout.
- Passengers will be routed to the curb front as the previous phase.
- All lanes of the curb front roadway will be utilized for passenger drop-off and pick-up.
- Access to and from the Parking Garages will temporarily be routed via the front curb. Use the left lanes from the front curb to access garages.
- Valet operations remain at the curb.
- Pedestrian access to the terminal will utilize the crosswalks from Garages A and B.
Duration: Approximately 5 months.
Phase 3B
- Construct two new roundabouts on GSP Drive, adjusting intersection roadways to match curvature of roundabouts.
- Passengers will be routed to the curb front as the previous phase.
- All lanes of the curb front roadway will be utilized for passenger drop-off and pick-up.
- Access to and from the Parking Garages will be via northern roundabout.
- Valet operations will be return to the curb front.
- Pedestrian access to the terminal will utilize the crosswalks from Garages A and B.
Duration: Approximately 7 months.
Frequently Asked Questions
During Phase 3, both the existing curbside roadway and the extended section will be complete and thus passenger drop-off and pick-up will resume along the entirety of the curb.
During Phase 3, vehicles will travel through a dedicated lane across construction at GSP Drive/Aviation Parkway to reach Garage A & B. Additionally, Valet parking will move locations during the project. Valet is located on the front curb during.
Both the existing curbside roadway and the extended section will be complete and thus all shuttle and rideshare drop-off and pick-up will resume in their original locations near baggage claim.
Valet pick-up and drop off is located on the front curb in the lane closest to the terminal building.
To better prepare yourself for any delays around construction, we recommend arriving 2 hours prior to your flight’s departure time.
During the Terminal Roadway Improvement Project (TRIP), it is necessary to remove some trees along the roadways at GSP. The trees are being removed to make way for roadway improvements ro reduce congestion near the terminal. Once this project is complete, we will replace these trees with new trees that will allow GSP to continue to offer our airport’s unique park-like environment for many years to come.
