The Airport

Greenville–Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) is located near Greer, South Carolina, midway between Greenville and Spartanburg. The airport is the second busiest airport in South Carolina with nearly 1.1 million enplanements in 2017.


The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, similar to many of the nation’s top 100 commercial service airports, is a political subdivision of the State of South Carolina that operates without taxpayer subsidy.

There are six major airlines at GSP: Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and United. Combined, these airlines offer:

• An average of 50 nonstop daily departures

• Nonstop service to 19 major cities and 19 major airports across the U.S.


Over 119 million pounds of cargo are loaded on and off planes every year at GSP. The airport also handles over 1000 just in time cargo (hot shot) flights each year.


Position Summary (Primary Function)

  • Under direct supervision, performs assigned police and traffic control duties.

Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Enforces traffic and parking rules.
  • Investigates crimes, accidents and suspicious activity on the airport property, prepares incident, booking, and accident reports.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies, writes state summons, and attends court when required.
  • Assist the general public, performs lockout, escort and protective services as directed.
  • Assists with the enforcement of the Airport Security Plan and Airport Emergency Plan requirements.
  • Attends training programs.
  • Operate a police vehicle on patrol, non-emergency response, emergency response, or pursuit for the apprehension of suspects.
  • Officers must qualify with their weapons at least once annually, or as directed by the training officer.
  • Handgun qualifications require an attainment of at least an eighty percent proficiency rating.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Sergeant.
  • Responsible for any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Airport Chief of Police.

Education Requirements (Skills, Education, Experience, and Ability)

High School Diploma or GED required.


Experience Requirements

Must have 2 years of law enforcement experience.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possess a general knowledge of Airport Rules and Regulations, Federal, State and local laws.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have the ability to discharge a firearm without undue risk to airport employees, tenants, and the public, and comply with the department firearm standards.
  • Operate a police vehicle on patrol, non-emergency response, emergency response, or pursuit for the apprehension of suspects.
  • Must have the ability to operate a vehicle and utilize radio equipment at the same time.
  • Officers must qualify with their weapons at least annually or as directed by the training officer. Handgun qualifications require an eighty percent (80%) proficiency rating.
  • Must successfully complete an annual medical physical designed for the performance and requirements of the job.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • None at this time.

Licenses Required

  • Valid Driver’s License

Certifications Required

  • Must be certified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council or meet the minimum requirements for entry into the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Successfully complete the requirements of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy pre-hire testing which include psychological profile, Police Officers selection test, Polygraph Exam, physical, drug and alcohol screening, and the field training program.

Latitude/Independent Judgment/Accuracy

  • Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information.
  • Reasonable care for equipment/process will prevent injury/damage.
  • Responsible for own work, but must coordinate work with others.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain control and good public relations under all conditions.

Working Conditions

  • To perform police tasks without undue effort or injury, the officer must comply with the minimal physical fitness performance requirements as outlined by the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Occupational Health office.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • May be required to perform work in adverse weather conditions, snow, ice etc.
  • Mental and/or Visual Demand - Mental and visual demands are high and vary with function performed.  Consistent mental attention needed to respond safely and efficiently.
  • Attentiveness to work procedure will reduce potential risk of injury in work areas.
  • This position requires uncommon tours of duty to include but not limited to weekends and holidays, rotating shift assignments and overtime duty.
  • Will be subject to recall after normal duty hours.
  • Maintain good Customer Service skills when dealing with tenants and the general public.

Other Requirements

Must be able to complete and pass pre-employment/post offer checks to include, but not limited to, background, drug, references, education, and DMV, as required by the Federal Government, aviation-related authorities and the District.
