New Rental Car Customer Center nearing completion at GSP

Date: November 28, 2012
Time:
Location:

WINGSPAN, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport’s terminal improvement program, is continuing progress and nearing the highly anticipated opening of the new Rental Car Customer Center.  Passengers will begin to see visual changes to the inside of the terminal and Garage A at the beginning of 2013.

“It’s important for passengers to know that they will not experience any travel interruptions as a result of WINGSPAN,” said GSP President and CEO Dave Edwards. “The terminal will remain fully functional throughout the holidays, and we’re looking forward to serving travelers during the busy holiday travel season.”

The new Rental Car Customer Center in Parking Garage A will be open in January 2013. At this time, all the rental car counters currently housed inside the terminal across from baggage claim will move to the new Rental Car Customer Center.

In addition to the Rental Car Customer Center, construction on the North Wing has started and is scheduled to be completed in January 2014. The North Wing will expand into what is now the short-term lot, and when finished will temporarily house airline ticket counters and offices. In addition to eventually housing the airport’s administration offices, the North Wing will also serve as the first phase build-out of the future second baggage claim area.

Renovations in the baggage claim area will begin in early 2013 and will be complete by January 2014. This includes the construction of a new third baggage carousel and replacing the two existing carousels.

Enhancements to the facade of the terminal will also begin in the upcoming year. Exterior modifications will include the installation of glass panels in place of concrete walls. This will allow more natural lighting to enter the facility and is designed to reduce electrical reliance for terminal lighting. Exterior modifications will also include construction of curbside canopies designed to shield travelers from the elements when arriving and departing GSP. A covered walkway connecting the terminal to Garages A will also be constructed.

About WINGSPAN

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport launched WINGSPAN, a four-year terminal improvement program in May that will modernize the main terminal building, improve passenger flow and upgrade the facility. Skanska Moss, a joint venture between Skanska USA Building and local contractor Moss & Associates, is serving as construction manager at-risk, Jacobs Engineering is serving as program manager and RS&H is serving as lead architect and engineer. GSP will seek as many local subcontractors as possible to participate, continuing its commitment to economic development throughout the Upstate. The terminal will remain operational throughout the entire process.
