GSP Commission recognized Roger Milliken

Date: April 11, 2011
Time: 9:00 a.m.
Location: GSP Airport Commission Office

During a special meeting on Monday April 11th, the GSP Airport Commission recognized and remembered the contributions of Mr. Roger Milliken to the aviation industry and the GSP Airport.

Current Chair of the Commission Minor Shaw reminded those in attendance, including two of the Milliken children Nancy and David that Mr. Milliken was indeed a visionary.  Shaw read an excerpt from a presentation given by Mr. Milliken to a group of Upstate legislators on November 11, 1958.  The Piedmont Area Airport presentation was intended to get the approval of the legislators to move forward with the airport project.  In that presentation Mr. Milliken was quoted as saying, “If we do this thing right, we will have an advantage that few such communities have ever realized.  This decision is the same type faced by towns one hundred years ago that wanted to build beside a railroad.  Here, we have a facility in keeping with the growth of our time.”

The Milliken family was presented with a framed resolution from the Airport Commission in honor of Mr. Milliken’s service.  They also received a 40 page leather bound photo album that highlighted milestones in the airport history from construction in the late 1950’s to the arrival of Southwest Airlines in 2011.  Speaking on behalf of the Milliken family, Nancy Milliken thanked the commission for the special recognition and for allowing Mr. Milliken to be a part of the airport family for so long.  She recalled how excited her father was about the airport in the early days and she said, “He never lost that excitement”.
